About Bishop's Boxers

Welcome to our blog!

We have been a Boxer-loving family since 1987. Our love for the breed began with our first boxer, Chesty. Purchased from a California pet store, Chesty was extremely intelligent and trained closely with military police dogs, becoming highly skilled in search and rescue.

After losing Chesty to cancer and knowing we didn't want to experience life without Boxers, we purchased a striking 8-month-old fawn male Boxer from Crossroad Boxers in California. We named him Bishop. Little did we realize that he would be the beginning of our kennel, Bishop's Boxers.

Bishop participated in many dog shows while we had time in graduate school, but then came four children and 16 years of active duty military life. Having the desire to have a puppy from Bishop and the determination to uphold and improve the standard of the Boxer breed, we bred Bishop and kept a puppy, Lady, from the litter in February of 2005. Lady produced two wonderful litters of puppies with Telstar Boxers. We continued our breeding program with Telstar Boxers and Eve, Lady’s daughter, until we retired from the military in 2016.

As we transitioned back into civilian life, we paused our breeding program for nearly five years and are pleased to introduce our two new Telstar females, Callie and Prancer. Our goal at Bishop’s Boxers is to be dedicated to breeding and raising healthy, beautiful dogs with affectionate temperaments and sound structure in accordance with the AKC Boxer breed standard. The health and well-being of all our animals from birth until they leave with their forever family--and beyond--is critical to us. We utilize current recommended health tests before breeding to provide our puppies the best opportunity for a long, healthy life.

Our puppies are raised by our family with children and other dogs. They play an active and very important role in caring for, preparing, and socializing the puppies for their future families. As a result, the puppies leave our home with a clear advantage in adapting and transitioning to their new families.

Introducing Our "Sweet" Little Puppies

Maddie continues to be a great mom to these puppies. Unfortunately, Milky Way, the white female, has a medical problem and is not expected to live, and that breaks our hearts.  For that reason, you will not see her picture here.  But the others are already thriving.  Check back for weekly photos of their growth!

Rolo: Fawn Male with a white chest and belly, and a tiny speck of white on his neck.

Hershey: Fawn Female with a white chest and belly. Looks almost identical to Rolo.

M&M: Fawn Female with a small patch of white on her neck, white chest and belly, and paws, and
a touch of white on her nose .

Snickers: Fawn Male with a white chest, belly, and neck, nose, and paws.

Happy New Year and 4--No, Make That 5 (Surprise!) Happy New Puppies

Maddie had an easy and quick delivery of her 5 puppies beginning at 5 a.m. today.  Final score: 3 girls, 2 boys.  There was a little guy hiding in that x-ray that was not seen! She is a great mom!  Check back for more pictures later today.

A Pregnant Maddie

Maddie is feeling pretty plump.  Lying in the same box she was born in 2 years ago, she's still calm and as comfortable as she can be.

Better in Pairs

In case you were wondering, we always say that boxers do best in pairs.  They have a constant companion to play and snuggle with (well, it's more like on top of each other) as seen below. Bruiser, on bottom (from our last litter, formerly known as Vixen) and his best friend Dusty share the family couch for a snooze.  Boxers have such great temperaments and personalities!  Thanks to Bruiser and Dusty's loving owner, Todd, for the photo. We love to keep in touch with our boxer families to see how they are doing!

Litter Update

Looks like Maddie is progressing nicely in her pregnancy with a bigger appetite and a fuller belly.  We hear that there are not many boxer puppies available or arriving soon, and have had several inquiries about the upcoming litter.  Contact us soon to be on our waiting list.  4 weeks to go!

A New Year, a New Litter!

Good News! Maddie was bred to Henry from Telstar Boxers (click here to visit Telstar's website) October 31. We are looking forward to having a new litter of puppies on (or about) January 2, 2013.  Maddie is from Lady's second litter and is one of the sweetest dogs. We called her Prancer (you can see more puppy pictures of her if you scroll down the blog).  If you are interested in a puppy from Maddie, please contact us to be placed on the interest list.  As always, we will keep the blog updated so you can follow the litter.

Always Part of the Family

You can always count on the Boxer to be right in the middle of your life. That includes in between your legs in the kitchen, at your dinner table (just in case you forgot to set a place for him), and just relaxing on a summer afternoon. Here, Eve makes a great head and foot rest for our daughter. Our kids can hardly wait for puppies again--hopefully coming in a few months!

I'm Leavin' On a Jet Plane

Bodie got a spa treatment today before leaving on a plane to his new family in Minnesota. He barely fit in the sink! We will miss him (the kids were crying after they said their goodbyes at the airport), but we know that our dear friends will love him to death. As breeders, one of the greatest rewards for us is being able to bring such joy to families.

Dasher

Crate training is essential for puppies because it provides them a safe place to call "home" when they can't be watched, and prevents damage (well, more like possible complete destruction) of your home! We put a small crate in the box to allow them to get used to being in one. As you can see, Vixen is sleeping very comfortably.

Everyone is thirsty after a few laps around the backyard.

What's All the Ruckus?

The puppies have a tremendous amount of energy in the morning, and they get particularly loud and boisterous with each other after breakfast.

Walkin' on Sunshine...

It was a beautiful 75 degrees in America's Finest City (San Diego), which meant a perfect day to get the puppies outside for the first time. Here's how they reacted to getting some grass between their toes.

Loving the Outdoors

Tearing It Up

As you plan for your puppy to come home, remember that anything and everything is a toy to them! If they can get into it, they will, and yes, the old excuse of "the dog ate my homework" is really true! So put up small pieces of toys, TV remotes, game cartridges, small articles of clothing (they love socks), and get some engaging toys like tennis balls, Kong chew toys, and small dog ropes (I found them at Target for $1).

Chow Time!

The family shared their first dinner (well, other than mom's milk) together and nearly cleaned their plate! We feed them Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy formula.

Our first boxer Chesty. He wasn't the most beautiful boxer, but certainly well-loved!
