About Bishop's Boxers

Welcome to our blog!

We have been a Boxer-loving family since 1987. Our love for the breed began with our first boxer, Chesty. Purchased from a California pet store, Chesty was extremely intelligent and trained closely with military police dogs, becoming highly skilled in search and rescue.

After losing Chesty to cancer and knowing we didn't want to experience life without Boxers, we purchased a striking 8-month-old fawn male Boxer from Crossroad Boxers in California. We named him Bishop. Little did we realize that he would be the beginning of our kennel, Bishop's Boxers.

Bishop participated in many dog shows while we had time in graduate school, but then came four children and 16 years of active duty military life. Having the desire to have a puppy from Bishop and the determination to uphold and improve the standard of the Boxer breed, we bred Bishop and kept a puppy, Lady, from the litter in February of 2005. Lady produced two wonderful litters of puppies with Telstar Boxers. We continued our breeding program with Telstar Boxers and Eve, Lady’s daughter, until we retired from the military in 2016.

As we transitioned back into civilian life, we paused our breeding program for nearly five years and are pleased to introduce our two new Telstar females, Callie and Prancer. Our goal at Bishop’s Boxers is to be dedicated to breeding and raising healthy, beautiful dogs with affectionate temperaments and sound structure in accordance with the AKC Boxer breed standard. The health and well-being of all our animals from birth until they leave with their forever family--and beyond--is critical to us. We utilize current recommended health tests before breeding to provide our puppies the best opportunity for a long, healthy life.

Our puppies are raised by our family with children and other dogs. They play an active and very important role in caring for, preparing, and socializing the puppies for their future families. As a result, the puppies leave our home with a clear advantage in adapting and transitioning to their new families.

Morning Feeding

Moms of newborn pups are ever-watchful and protective of their babies.  They never want to leave, so we have to bring her food and water to her so she can eat and have enough energy to keep up with and nurse the little ones.

Introducing Our New Boxer Puppy Litter

For each litter, our family picks a theme for the puppies' kennel names.  In the past, we have had Bible names, Santa's reindeer (they arrived on December 23), candies, and sodas.  This litter's theme is Hawaii.   In 2000, we began our Navy career at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.  Our oldest two children were born there, so we have many special memories of our years on Oahu.  Nothing beats the fresh pineapple, white sandy beaches, and daily rainbows in the sky. These names remind us of our time there.

Final Puppy Count

Eve did a great job delivering the puppies last night. The final count is 8, with 3 boys, and 5 girls (my eyes must have been fuzzy last night when I initially said 2 boys and 6 girls). They are all doing well.  I'll post individual photos later today (after a nap!).

Puppy Update

It's 4 a.m. and we are up to eight puppies. She's doing a great job!  We'll see if any more might show up.  Count so far: 6 girls, 2 boys! They are beautiful, and a very active bunch already!

Puppies are on the Way!

Eve is just in the first stage of labor this morning.  She is still comfortable, but is ready for those puppies to come out.  Check back later for any developments.

Eve Update

Well...we had an x-ray on Saturday, and, unfortunately, have nothing newsworthy to report. They had problems with the x-ray machine, and then determined that the heads were not calcified enough to show up on the film.  We may have another done on Wednesday, but we may just wait and be surprised at whelping time, and just take one after the deliveries to make sure they are all out.  In any case, puppies are coming without a doubt. Eve looks like she swallowed a cantaloupe, but she is doing fine.  Based on her last litter, she will whelp before Saturday--my guess is Thursday.  Check back here for up-to-date information.

Boxer Puppies Coming to South Carolina Next Week!

This is Eve's favorite position these days. As you can see, she's pretty plump! Based on her figure, maybe she'll be having another troop (last year, she had 10!). We'll be getting an x-ray this Saturday so we can know approximately how many to expect next week. We set up the whelping box last weekend so she is free to go in when she feels the need to nest and gets ready to deliver.

Eve Update

Eve is doing well and her belly is definitely starting to show signs of pregnancy.  In a few weeks when we take an x-ray, we'll have a better idea of how many puppies she is expecting.

Placing our puppies in the best homes is critical to us.  Therefore, we ask all potential owners to complete a questionnaire about their families and homes.  Our waiting list is growing quickly, so if you would like to be considered for puppy placement, please contact us soon so we can email it to you.

South Carolina Boxer Puppies Anticipated mid-July!

Eve had a busy week with her new boyfriend, Jester, of Pryde Boxers. Being in the Charleston area only a few weeks, we wanted to choose a healthy male that would compliment Eve well.  Jester is a 6- year-old, medium-sized, dark brindle male with a very nice head and strong, solid frame.  He is pictured below. We anticipate a litter of brindle, fawn, and maybe even white puppies around July 19th.  Puppies will be available to go to their new homes in September.  Please contact us for more information about this upcoming litter.

Change is Never Easy!

After over 10 years in San Diego, the Navy abruptly uprooted us to Charleston, South Carolina.  We just moved in to our new home in Summerville last week.  Leaving home on a very short notice was a huge challenge for both humans and canines alike.  This also posed another challenge of relocating our kennel. Not knowing anyone in South Carolina has forced us to find another reputable breeder to work with so we can continue breeding.  Now that we are still unpacking boxes, we noticed that Eve is in heat--early!  Such great timing!  We are quickly interviewing potential breeders to find a high quality, healthy (and beautiful) stud for Eve.  For all of you in California, do not be dismayed!  We can still ship puppies back to you, or you can take a little trip east and visit Charleston (it's beautiful here!) and bring your puppy back with you.  We will anticipate puppies in July, with them ready to leave for their new homes in mid-late September.  We'll keep the blog updated with any new information about the upcoming litter!  Thanks for your continued support as we make this transition.

Three Generations

Dogs love this warm sun-cool air of the fall! I caught all three of them basking in the sun this morning.

Puppies at 9 Weeks!

I just realized I forgot to post these last weekend!  Mr. Pibb and Bubbles left for their new homes, and that leaves us with Latte.  We love her, and she is doing so well with her potty training already.  We hope you are experiencing the same thing.

First Goodbye

Rufus (Squirt) was the first of the clan to leave today. He looked and smelled awfully beautiful
 after his first bath!

Take a Guess

What do all of these items have in common? They are all perfect things for your puppy to chew and destroy! Anything that is on the floor is fair game, so pick it up if you want to keep it.

Puppy Cam

This was the puppies' last play time together.  They love to run outside.

Tick, Tock

The clock is ticking down to the end of our time with the puppies. Squirt is the first one to leave tomorrow afternoon.  Will Eve get sad?  Yes, she will notice them missing.  Even though she is not with them all the time now, we know she wants to check on her babies when she stands by the door to go to the garage.  She still produces milk and lets them nurse.

Do we get sad when they leave?

Yes, we might shed a few tears (especially our girls).  It has been an intense 2 months when we have poured our hearts and time into raising these boxer puppies.  Such a large litter demanded extra effort to make sure they were all growing properly. We love them to death, even after they leave.

And no.  It's a whole lot of poop.

Flip-flops--might want to buy an extra pair or two!

There is always one in the bunch who does not want to smile!

Food: we always suggest moistening the puppy food to prevent choking.  Simply add very hot tap water to the food, and let it sit for a few minutes to moisten. This is more food than you will make at home (this is going to feed 5). Your puppy will probably eat between 1/2 to 3/4 cup puppy food at a sitting. They are eating twice a day (morning and evening). The bubbles you see is from the water releasing the gas in the food.
Less gas in boxers is always a good thing :)
This is after about 5 minutes. The food is moist, is
still a little firm to the touch, and the water has all been absorbed.
As they grow older, you will not need to add as much water.  But they will always prefer it with a little water.

Our first boxer Chesty. He wasn't the most beautiful boxer, but certainly well-loved!
